Startup Worldcup

OPEN Silicon Valley Forum has been hosting the Entrepreneurial Idol, an opportunity for startups to pitch to the investors and advisors for feedback and funding. It was a good starting point to expand the program. Four years ago, Shoieb Yunus, OPEN SV CM pitched the idea of having a quarterly event, LaunchPad, to then-OPEN SV president Moazzam Chaudhry. Moazzam endorsed the idea. The first LaunchPad event was hosted at SAP offices in Palo Alto, CA. The first event was attended by 50 people, where seven companies including a multi-million dollar motion picture project from Texas pitched the idea to the potential investors.
In the past four years, OPEN SV has given the opportunity to numerous startups to pitch their ideas and make connections with the investment community. To make the program a success, we want to recognize the active participantion of OPEN SV charter members including Riaz Karamali, Idris Kothari, Mahmood Virani, Umair Khan, Ammar Hanafi, Rehan Jalil, Faysal Sohail, Zain Jeewanjee, Faruq Ahmed, Jaffer Hussain and Shoieb Yunus.
In addition, angel investors, venture capitalists and representatives from the incubators will/have actively participated in our program, including CMEA Capital, Sequoia Capital, Garage Technology, Alloy Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, The Angels Forum, Sand Hill Angels, Band of Angels, Ideavelopers, The Social+Capital Partnerships, Cohesive Partners, PITME, Spartups and others. Also want to thank Pillsbury Law Firm, AT&T Foundry and SAP for hosting the events.
Success Stories
This program has continued to grow under the leadership of Shahab Riazi. In 2014, at the OPEN SV Forum, Samad Nasserian, founder of San Francisco- based startup Cozy Meal, raised $100K in funding. In October 2014, Usman Sheikh, founder of XtraIQ pitched for the first time and closed funding; and Shakir Abbas, founder of Momentum Zone pitched the idea at our event, made the connections with a distinguished angel investor and now on his way to get funded. Presenters from our last event made a lasting impression and made invaluable connections with the investors. We hope to hear some great stories soon.
