This panel will Introduce OPEN Forum attendees to the changing entrepreneurial landscape of Pakistan and showcase some of the recent success stories while highlighting the role that LUMS is playing in catalyzing this ecosystem. The panel will also talk about investment opportunities with the current ecosystem supporting tech and non-tech startups in Pakistan for the diaspora.




Moazzam Chaudry (Moderator)

Moazzam currently heads an enterprise product line and go-to-market strategy for Fusion Middleware Cloud offerings at Oracle Corporation. Prior to Oracle Moazzam was heading a mid to high end enterprise server product line at Sun Microsystems. In this capacity he was responsible for both inbound, outbound product management & marketing and had world wide launch responsibilities for the multi billion dollar product line. Prior to that he was managing a global microprocessor design & verification team from SUN Microsystem and Texas Instruments.

Moazzam is the past President & current Global Board member of OPEN (Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs) Silicon Valley. He has been an advisor to various startups and has served on the boards of VLAB (MIT/Stanford Venture Lab) and HDF (Human Development Foundation).

Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood

Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood is the Chairman of Descon, which is involved in Engineering & Construction, Chemicals and Power. Descon Engineering is a Pakistani Multinational Company operating in 5 countries, holding 5 overseas manufacturing units and employing more than 14,000 workers (50% of whom are based overseas). Descon’s employees make up a wide diversity, comprising of 20 nationalities working in Pakistan and abroad.

Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood is a former Minister of Commerce, Industries and Production, Government of Pakistan and former Director of the State Bank of Pakistan. He became the trustee of Shaukat Khanam Memorial Hospital at its inception and remained with the hospital for 10 years. Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood has been involved in Education for many years. He has been involved with the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) from its inception and has been its Rector since 1986. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Board of Namal College, Mianwali.

Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood was the first Chairman of the Pakistan Business Council (2006-2010) and currently serves as a Director on its Board


Idris A. Kothari

40 years’ experience in high-tech industry. Co-founded number of successful Silicon Valley start-ups in Network security, PC Chip-sets and Hospitality Services. Held various senior management positions of CTO, VP Engineering and product development. Served on the Board of directors of these start ups.

Co-founder of VIA Technology that developed one of the first fab-less semiconductor product lines for the PC market in 1987. Initially funded by Fujitsu Microelectronics, Mitsubishi and Sun Moon Star. VIA was acquired by FIC Corporation of Taiwan in 1991.

Co-founder of VPNet, where development of initial VPN HW accelerator systems helped define the Virtual Private Network space. VPNet – was funded by Silicon Valley VC’s and acquired by Avaya in 2001.

Co-founder of Vertical Systems Inc, a hospitality service business providing key software technologies for travelers through 1000 hotels / resorts systems installed around the globe. Developed key technologies in self healing PC’s – remote monitoring / updates and micro-charging infrastructure over the internet. VSi has a development and support office in Islamabad since 2003.



Owais Anjum

Owais is the CEO of eMumba and president OPEN Islamabad. He is also the founder of Cricout – the first ever social network for cricket that boasts over 120,000 users across the world. A Silicon Valley veteran, Owais has over 17 years experience in product design, technology management and leadership. He has built and scaled teams both in the US and in Pakistan and has a track record of delivering high quality products. His last stint with Numetrics as Managing Director involved initiating company’s operations in Pakistan and scaling it to 40 people that powered 90% of company’s global engineering needs. He is a very active member of the Islamabad entrepreneurial circle and was instrumental in setting up OPEN’s chapter in Islamabad. Owais has an undergrad in CS from GIK Institute (1997), and an MBA from San Jose State University (2005).
